On this day (April 12, 685 CE {27/28 Sha’ban, 65 AH}), the 5th Umayyad Caliph Abdul Malik ibn Marwan came to power after the death of his father Marwan ibn al-Hakam (Marwan I).

The gold dinar minted in Damascus during the reign of Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (697–98)

He held administrative and military posts under the founder of the Umayyad Caliphate, Caliph Mu’awiya I (Mu’awiyah ibn Abu Sufyaan radiyallahu anhu) and under his own father, the aforementioned Caliph Marwan I.
